Overcoming Discouragement as a Small Business Owner: Finding Strength in the Struggles

Hey y'all!!! First of all Happy New Year!!! Today were talking about overcoming discouragement as a small business ower. This can be any type of business, not just candle making, and/or life in general.

Running a small business is an incredible journey filled with passion, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose. But let’s be honest—it’s not always easy. There are days when the challenges seem overwhelming, when sales aren’t where you hoped they’d be, or when you start to question whether all the hard work is worth it. If you’ve ever felt discouraged as a small business owner, know that you’re not alone. It’s a common experience, but it’s also something you can overcome. Here’s how to navigate those tough moments and find the strength to keep going.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

The first step in overcoming discouragement is to acknowledge that it’s okay to feel this way. Owning a business is a rollercoaster of highs and lows, and feeling down is a natural part of the process. Instead of pushing those feelings aside, give yourself permission to feel them!!! This self-compassion is crucial in preventing burnout and allowing you to move forward with a clearer mind. Take the time you need.

Reflect on Your “Why”

When the going gets tough, it’s important to reconnect with the reasons you started your business in the first place. What inspired you to take this path? What are the core values that drive your business? Reflecting on your “why” can reignite your passion and remind you of the bigger picture. Your purpose is the fuel that will keep you going, even when the road gets rocky. If this helps write your why's down on post it notes and put them in an area that you're going to see often. This could be a notebook, a journal, a "WHY vision board", or a wall.

Set Realistic Expectations

One of the most common sources of discouragement is setting unrealistic expectations. As entrepreneurs, we often aim high—and that’s a good thing. However, it’s important to set goals that are challenging yet attainable. For example, let's say you want to write a blog and post three times a week. This is very attainable for some, however if you have a busy schedule and or take care of others, this may not work for you. Instead schedule one day during the week where you can sit down and create one blog. Start to post once a week, then add on another day if that works. Also I highly recommend scheduling out so you dont have to think about it. Break down big goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Celebrate the small wins along the way, and understand that success is a marathon, not a sprint.

Seek Support from Your Community

You don’t have to go through this journey alone. Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow entrepreneurs, mentors, or friends who understand the unique challenges of running a small business. Sometimes, simply talking through your struggles with someone who “gets it” can provide the perspective and encouragement you need. Online communities, local business groups, and networking events are great places to connect with others. I recently joined a Whatsapp group in December 2024, the makers in the group are very supportive and helpful. I am truly an introvert lol so I choose one maker that I talk to regularly.

Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

In the begining of my business and even now I fail and no longer take it personally. I learn from it and always do better. Failure is a natural part of any business journey, but it doesn’t define you. Instead of viewing setbacks as a reflection of your worth or ability, see them as valuable learning opportunities. What can you learn from this experience? How can you improve moving forward? Shifting your mindset from “I failed” to “I learned” can empower you to grow stronger with each challenge.

Take Care of Yourself

When you’re running a business, it’s easy to put everything else before your own well-being. I can't stree this enough, put on your own mask first. Taking care of yourself is crucial for sustaining the energy and creativity needed to run your business, and your family. Not to mention if you're running a business and you also have a 9-5 job. Make time for activities that recharge you—whether it’s exercise, reading, spending time with loved ones, or simply taking a moment to breathe. A healthy mind and body are your greatest assets.

Reassess and Adjust

If you’re feeling consistently discouraged, it might be time to reassess your business strategy. Are there areas where you can pivot or adjust your approach? Maybe it’s time to introduce a new product, revamp your marketing, or explore a different target audience. Sometimes a fresh perspective or a small change can reignite your business and your motivation.

Celebrate Your Progress

It’s easy to focus on what hasn’t been achieved, but don’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve come. Look back at the progress you’ve made, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the growth you’ve experienced as both an entrepreneur and an individual. Every step forward is a victory, no matter how small.

Stay Patient and Persistent

Success rarely happens overnight. It’s built on a foundation of patience and persistence. Keep showing up, even on the days when it feels hard. Trust the process, believe in your vision, and remember that every small step is bringing you closer to your goals.

Feeling discouraged is a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey, but it doesn’t have to derail you. By acknowledging your feelings, reconnecting with your purpose, seeking support, and staying persistent, you can overcome these challenges and continue building the business of your dreams. Remember, the road to success is paved with perseverance, and you have the strength to keep moving forward.

You’ve got this!

Lastly, always remeber to acknowledge your feelings, reflect on your why, set realistic expectations, have a make a Maker friend you feel comfortable enough to take advice from. Most importantly, You've got this!!!!!

Thank you for being here,
